My TAPPI Story: Dave Maddux
Pressurized peroxide (PO) bleaching was performed on three softwood kraft pulps, two ECF and one TCF. The inclusion of sodium silicate and MgSO4 7H2O improved brightness by up to 5 points G.E.; viscosity up to 6 cP; and yield up to 2.0% on pulp. Transition metals caused wasteful decomposition of the principal brightner, H2O2, resulting in a lower final brightness. The free radicals generated during the decomposition process degrade carbohydrates resulting in lower viscosity and yield. The sodium silicate/ MgSO4 7H2O combination adsorbed transition metals and decreased their activity. The combination also had a beneficial effect on O2 delignification of an unbleached pulp. The issue of scaling associated with silicate use is addressed.
