Effect of Selected Chemicals in Recycled Filtrate on the Selectivity During O2 Delignification, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings

It has been found that the selectivity of an oxygen delignification of kraft pulp is improved by recirculating the spent liquor. Reaction products, such as muconic acids, alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acids, sodium acetate, sodium carbonate and methanol are present in the filtrate of an oxygen stage. Since these small organic substances are good radical scavengers, their presence may reduce the cellulose degradation which is caused by attack of non-selective, highly reactive radical species. In addition, -hydroxy carboxylates may serve as complexing agents so that the catalytic activity of transition metal ions is suppressed. In this investigation we studied the effect of the addition of muconic acid, sodium gluconate, glucose, methyl-ß-D-glucopyranoside, sodium carbonate and sodium acetate on the selectivity of oxygen delignification of softwood kraft pulp. The results are interpreted based on the above proposed mechanisms.
