Model Based Pulp Quality Control of TMP Refiner, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings

A model based control system has been developed to control the TMP pulp quality in a commercial newsprint mill. The system is designed in a practical way. It consists of a refining consistency model, a pulp quality prediction model, and a closed-loop control system. Techniques that have been used include neural network modeling, dynamic process simulation and model based multivariable control. The system is operating on all refiner lines with over 90% uptime. Refiner dilution flows and plate gaps are manipulated simultaneously to control both freeness and fiber length. The monthly standard deviation of freeness has been reduced by approximately 50% while the highest fiber length is maintained. Other benefits include improved refiner stability, less trips and longer plate life. This paper illustrates the techniques of real time process modeling and model based process control.
