Waste Minimization and Contaminant Control at Kuan Yuan Paper, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings
The paper industry has traditionally been regarded as a large consumer of water, and also an industry that pollutes the environment a lot. However, new technology in the area of pollution control and waste minimization have been developed. Many mills, particularly Kuan Yuan’s Taichung Mill, practice “Cleaner Production”. They are waste minimizers and no longer pollution producers.
The Kuan Yuan, Taichung mill was established in 1984, producing 450 tons of coated white paper board per day. The primary raw material is recycled fiber processed through two basic systems. One for fiber requiring deinking, and another for non deink fibers. Figure 1 shows a general schematic of the basic paper manufacturing process along with the wastes generated at various stages of the process.
