Implementation of a Pressurized Hydrogen Peroxide Stage and ECF Conversion at Western Pulp Limited, Squamish Division, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings
A new pressurized hydrogen peroxide stage (Epo) was installed at the Western Pulp Squamish Operation following extensive laboratory trials. The objectives of the project were to:
· Decrease AOX in final treated effluent;
· Decrease TOX concentration in fully bleached pulp;
· Minimize ClO 2 usage to allow full time ECF operation at a higher production rate;
· Lower bleaching cost; and
· Improve pulp quality; particularly higher ECF brightness.
Sufficient flexibility was built in the design to run two sequences (DEpoD, DEoEpoD). This paper discusses:
· Laboratory bleaching trials;
· Equipment and process changes required to install a pressurized Epo stage;
· Epo stage optimization and impact on effluent and pulp quality; and
· Bleaching chemical consumption and cost.
