Polysulfide (PS) pulping of a Canadian softwood blend was evaluated using oxidized mill white liquor containing PS at various concentrations generated from Paprican’s PS process. The screened pulp yield increase over the reference kraft cook depends on both the PS charge and the pulping rate. Using PS alone, a screened pulp yield increase of 1.1- 1.3% can be obtained with an oxidized liquor containing intermediate PS concentrations. A higher pulp yield increase (1.7-1.9%) can be realized using a highly oxidized liquor in conjunction with 3% extra sulfidity, 1% extra EA or 0.05% soluble anthraquinone (on OD wood). In the case of PS-SAQ, the total screened pulp yield increase over the kraft reference is ~3.5%. “Synthetic” PS prepared from the reaction of elemental sulfur and sodium sulfide is not a good representation for PS generated from the oxidation of mill white liquor.
