High-Yield Pulping of a Fast-Growing Tropical Species - Acacia Mangium, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Acacia Mangium is a fast-growing tropical species which has a great potential for papermaking. However, little information on the pulping behavior of this wood is available, particularly in the area of high-yield pulping. In this work we studied the pulping characteristics of young plantation-grown A. mangium using alkaline sulfite chemimechanical pulping (CMP) and chemithermomechanical pulping (CTMP). Results were compared with those obtained from Canadian aspen, birch and maple pulped under similar conditions. In general, A. mangium produced pulps which were inferior in physical and optical properties in comparison to those made from Canadian hardwoods. It was found that the CMP effluent from A. mangium was particularly high in solids content, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand and toxicity, with respect to the Canadian hardwoods studied.
