Plantain (Musa Paradisiaca L) Pseudostem; A Fibre Source for Tropical Countries, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings
The Pulping characteristics of Plantain (Musa paradisiaca L) pseudostem was evaluated. The fibres have a mean length of 3.89mm. Chemical analysis revealed that the fibres have a holocellulose content of 60.82% and lignin of 12.29%. The fibres were pulped with 9% active alkali to produce pulps of 59% yield and kappa number of 30.
The unbleached pulp produced from the kraft process exhibited strength properties which compared favourably with southern pine but better than sweet gum kraft pulps.
