Special cooks were carried out under different compacting pressures. New chips with uniform length and thickness were cooked to measure their compressibility and flow resistance in cooking. The specially screened reference chips were made in a conventional sawmill chipper. The new chips were found to be slightly more compressible than the reference chips. Under low pressure, the former have a little higher liquid volume fraction than the latter at the same delignification degree, but under high pressure their behaviour is the same. According to the flow dynamic modelling, both types of chips have a similar flow resistance under different compacting pressures and flow rates. As the difference between new and reference chips is quite small, no major changes can be expected in industrial digesters.
