My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Tall oil soap is an important by-product of the kraft pulping process. Recovery of the crude soap can improve mill economics in a variety of ways. Higher yields of crude soap result in greater revenue from direct sales but also influence evaporator plant efficiency. Jar tests were used to examine the performance of surfactants and polymers for activity in this application. Surfactants and polymers can be effective and also selective in crude tall oil soap yield improvement. The Saltsman-Kuiken determination procedure was found to be a relatively insensitive method for measuring the activity of potential treatments. As a result, a gas chromatographic method was developed and found to be very useful for quantifying the amount of both fatty and rosin acid soaps present in a variety of black liquor samples from several mills. We will present the results of our research and discuss both laboratory and in-mill trial results.
