Experience and Development of RDH Cooking in Morrums Mill, Sodra Cell, Sweden, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings

In recent years, both continuous and batch cooking technologies have been commercially implemented in pulp mills around the world. The resurgence of batch cooking technologies has been due to dramatic improvements on steam economy and flexibility for high quality pulp production even with differing entering wood species or wood quality.

Technologies such as alkali leveling, reduction of solids during cooking, different impregnation technologies, and effective management of extractives during the cook have demonstrated a positive effect on pulp uniformity, yield, and pulp bleachability. The results of such technologies, as implemented at the Mörrums Bruk mill of Södra Cell AB will be quantified in this paper, and show that displacement batch cooking technology is an attractive option for new and existing mills faced with investment in new or major rebuilds of their cooking plants.
