Variation of Wood and Fiber Properties in Natural Stands: Effect on Sheet Properties, 1998 Pulping Conference Proceedings

Second-growth natural stands of Canadian softwoods are characterized by large within-species variability in wood density and fiber properties. This variability leads to a correspondingly wide distribution of kraft pulp handsheet properties. Statistical analysis of wood, fiber and kraft pulp handsheet data from the juvenile, mature and top wood components of second-growth lodgepole pine from British Columbia and Alberta show that chip density and fiber coarseness are the two most significant parameters which determine the pulp properties from second-growth forests. These findings are supported by corresponding data from second-growth Douglas-fir and jack pine and are important to tree geneticists and all those who manage our forests for specific end uses.
