A new control and measurement strategy for ECF bleaching process was developed and tested in a mill scale. The successful development of the control system based on the earlier published laboratory results, which clearly indicate that in ECF bleaching the optimum final pH is different in each D stages, and additionally strongly dependent on the chlorine dioxide dosage used.
The results of the long-term mill experiences show that, when the brightness and kappa factor controls are supported by existing pH measurement, the function of bleaching stages can be controlled more comprehensively than ever before. This system will give an significant chemical savings and also behave as a safeguard for the final technical properties of the produced pulp.
