Kathy Kulas--This session will begin with a presentation by Ari Ammala, University of Oulu (Finland), titles Sampling of Pulp Slurry. This work compares manual sampling with a semi-automatic sampler for manual testing pulp consistency. The 20 minute presentation, plus ten minutes available for questions and answers, will open the subject by introducing the following topics:
The statistical implications of separating true process variability from sampling and testing errors
Manual sampling limitations
How to utilize semi-automatic sampling devices to reduce sampling error
Standardize test methods (TAPPI T-240, etc); limitations and application, etc.
The next hour will have a panel of about five mill people each presenting 5-7 minutes each without questions taken after each person. Once all have had their brief chance to talk, the floor is open for the audience to ask questions and have comments made by one or more of the panel.
The presentations will describe briefly a particular consistence control installation or the mill’s general approach to how they manage consistence measurements. Topics they will discuss follow below, and can be further explored during the discussion time.
What type of meter (fixed or rotating blade, optical, nuclear, microwave, etc.) and general installation requirements.
What is needed for proper installation of a consistency control loop for ~12% consistency to ~3.5% and have the best control?
What data is needed to properly calibrate a consistency meter?
How far from the “normal” reading should a meter be calibrated to accurately know the slope of the relationship between meter signal and real consistency?
What is recommended for rechecking cons. meters for calibration? Test method the same as the first time setup?
How frequent to recheck?
What process parameters affect calibration of each type of meter? (i.e. changes in species, pH, temperature, liquor solids)?
How far from the “normal” reading should a meter be calibrated to accurately know the slope of the relationship between meter signal and real consistency?
