Not long ago, North America was the leader in the development and implementation of new pulp & paper making technology. Does the recent past indicate that it will be again in the future?
This paper describes recent technological advances in pulping, bleaching, and papermaking. Where did they originate? Where were they first implemented? Where have they been successfully installed? Did they improve capital effectiveness? Are there different technology trends in Europe and North America? In Asia? What are the reasons for these differences? Will they impact current and future competitiveness?
The conclusions reflect the concern that the North American technology is aging and may render our industry inadequately prepared to meet competitive pressures from Europe and Asia, where more of the recent technologies have been implemented.
