Acid sulfite paper pulp mills do not comply with the needs of modern pulp production and sooner or later they have to come to a basic decision regarding their future. The most probable alternatives are a complete shut down or a rebuilding of the mill by installation of a new competitive process.
ASAM pulping is a very promising alternative which broadens the raw material spectrum of a mill and yields excellent pulp properties. ASAM pulps are easily bleached in TCF short sequences and the mill can be operated in a highly closed system. ASAM softwood pulps are nearly twice as strong as sulfite pulps. The bleaching filtrates can be incorporated into the black liquor treatment and the bleach alkali can be generated by the chemical conversion.
