Flax fiber from Canadian oilseed flax straw is added at different ratios to hardwood chips processed in traditional Kraft cooking processes. Packing density in digester is not affected at lower flax/wood ratios (up to 20 % flax addition). The advantages of the flax fiber addition are a.) a lower KAPPA number and b.) improved strength especially, the tear strength). In addition, the flax containing pulps show very favorable bleaching behaviors. Properties of flax containing pulps are compared to a hardwood control and a 50/50 hardwood/softwood mixture.
