Straw pulp mills are finding it difficult to survive in the face of competition with wood based mills as well as in meeting compliance with environmental requirement. In the paper industry it is often questioned whether there is a future for straw mills. The global picture of future fiber supply to meet the demand for growth in population, literacy and rise in standard of living, indicates there is not sufficient supply of wood. On the other hand, there is abundant supply of straw available as people need food. This, in particular, is true for the large populated countries such as China and India. Straw has certain limitations as a raw material. This paper examines how these limitations could be overcome through integration with wood and secondary fiber based mills.
