Variation in Spruce Fiber Properties Between Logs and Trees, 1999 Pulping Conference Proceedings

The dependence of some paper properties on fiber properties is briefly analyzed. On the basis of the analysis, further attention is paid to the variation of fiber length, cell-wall thickness, and cross-sectional fiber compactness. The variation in these fiber properties is described with a simple distribution function. An application for wood raw material classification is presented and demonstrated using two independent materials. All these three properties increase with tree size. At a specified tree size, all these properties increase with tree age, i.e. with decreasing growth rate. The latter effect dominates the variation in cell-wall thickness and compactness.
