The technology of bar-to-bar refining has been utilized since the development of the Beater in the mid-1800’s. Developments in refiner design have continued to the technology of today with Double-disk refiners, Multi-disk refiners and Conical refiners. This selection brings with it the capability to provide a wide range of intensity levels to the paper machine furnishes. A general overview of these designs will be presented.

Along with a discussion of different types of refiners and refiner fillings, there will also be discussion on the varying system considerations. The mode of operation in the mill has significant effects on the properties of the final stock.

Data will be shown that indicates the advantages of refining softwood and hardwood furnishes separately prior to blending. However, these advantages are counterbalanced by increased installed equipment costs and increased energy requirements.

Additional data will illustrate that there is little difference in strength development of a furnish between operating the refiners in series or in parallel. However, parallel operation will require additional flow control loops to maintain a good flow split between refiners.

The various basic refiner control schemes will also be discussed, with the recommended system being constant energy control system from both a capital and maintenance standpoint.
