My TAPPI Story: Dave Maddux
M. MacLeod, T. Radiotis, V. Uloth, F. Munro, L. Tench--We used triple hanging baskets to measure the yield difference between the Paprilox TM polysulphide-anthraquinone (PS-AQ) and kraft pulping processes during birch pulp production in a mill’s conventional batch digester system. Further, the comparison was based on two different chip furnishes Š pure white birch reference chips, and run-of- the-mill birch chips. In the mill, PS-AQ pulping had a yield advantage of 1.6% to 1.8% over kraft at 15 kappa number. In pilot-plant experiments using the same chip furnishes and the mill-made pulping liquors, the PS-AQ yield advantage was at least 1.4%. Except for a modest tensile strength advantage in the PS-AQ case, the unbleached basket pulps from the two processes were essentially alike in physical properties. No differences were found in the mill-bleached pulps, nor was any change noted in fine papermaking in the mill.
