Standardizing Ozone Application at Laboratory Scale: A Benchmarking Study of Several North American Facilities, 2001 Pulping Conference Proceedings
S. Fisher--A comparison of performance was conducted between several laboratories in pulp bleaching with ozone.
Several North American laboratories compared results from laboratory ozone bleaching of softwood pulp.
Participants all applied ozone under pressure using high-shear mixing devices in a study having a common
protocol and identical pulp samples. Two rounds of ZE bleaching were performed, with each round having
at least five participants from established North American laboratories. Measured results include kappa
number, brightness, and filtrate COD. Review of results among participants concluded that some
inconsistencies exist in practice when applying ozone at the laboratory scale. Critical factors effecting
performance were identified to include adequate mixing, location and timing of gas injection, dosage
measurement, and method of compression.
