Effect of Calcium Loading on Bleach Line Scaling Potential, 2001 Pulping Conference Proceedings

L. S. Anker, D. F. Zidovec, R. T. Korol--Recent trends in Kraft ECF bleaching and mill effluent reduction have significantly increased the inorganic scaling potential and adversely affected bleach plant operations. We will describe the systematic analysis of Kraft bleach line processes in which we determine the calcium concentrations as a function of oven-dried pulp. We will demonstrate how the increased concentration of calcium has resulted in a more stressed environment with higher scaling potentials and requiring a different class of chemicals for scale control. The survey data will be used to develop parameters for off-line dynamic scaling potential tests and for the development of more effective bleach plant anti-scalant chemistries.
