Microparticle Retention Aid for Use in Low Speed Washers Used for Deinking & Thickening, 2001 Pulping Conference Proceedings

B. H. Hartong, R. D. Haynes--Low shear washers are used to remove ink contamination from recycled pulp. Low inlet consistency and yield loss decrease the production rate of these washers. Microparticle retention aids applied on paper machines improve drainage and retention. If these benefits could be transferred to wash deinking, throughput on existing machines could be increased. The application of several microparticle retention aid chemistries to laboratory wash deinking is examined in this paper. All microparticle chemistries tested improved drainage rates. Cationic retention aids cause a decrease in brightness at constant retention levels. A limited sampling of anionic retention aids shows an increase in brightness at equal retention. It is proposed that these results are related to the retention or repulsion of ink by the retention aids.
