Evaluation of the Use of Infrared Spectroscopy and Multivariate Analysis as Tools for Pulp Characterization, 2001 Pulping Conference Proceedings

L. Lavalle, A. J. Sommer, R. C. Peterson--This work presents results based on near-infrared (NIR) spectrophotometry coupled with multivariate analysis to explore the feasibility of detecting and quantifying different types of fibers present in handsheets. Models were developed to determine the amount of old newspaper (ONP) present in real world samples. These models were built using two basic chemometric methods: PLS (Partial Least Squares) and PCA (Principal Component Analysis). The results demonstrate that it is possible to quantify the amount of ONP in an office waste mixture in a relatively short period of time (15 minutes). Root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP) of less than 4% were obtained for real samples.
