My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
M. Petit-Conil, B. Brochier, F. Labalette, P. Combette--Wheat straw chemimechanical pulps were produced at pilot plant scale with the extruder (bivis) technology and impregnation with sodium hydroxide alone. Different pulping conditions, screw profiles and wheat straw conditioning were tested. Two wheat straw CMP batches were prepared in order to manufacture fluting papers and liner boards on an experimental paper machine. Different fibrous compositions based on wheat straw CMP, an industrial hardwood semi-chemical pulp and an industrial recycled fibers pulp were studied in order to determine the runnability of the paper machine with different wheat straw CMP contents. With the resulting fluting papers and liner boards, corrugated boards were produced on a pilot corrugator. Different combinations of fluting papers and liner boards containing wheat straw CMP were studied. Fluting papers and liner boards could be manufactured with up to 40% wheat straw CMP without degradation of the paper quality and the paper machine runnability. No significant effect was observed on the final corrugated boards.
