Developing Pressure Sensitive Adhesives for Environmentally Benign Postage Stamps, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
Dr. S.W. Medina, Dr. P. Tkaczuk--Building a benign stamp laminate requires several well researched choices which include the proper facestock and liner, meeting challenging coating requirements and selecting the right pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA). For the PSA formulator, the performance goals are daunting. In addition to providing good coating and converting characteristics, the PSA must have aggressive adhesion with good aged performance on olefinic and a wide range of coated paper substrates. These needs must be balanced against the goals of good water removability and overall recyclability, clearly impacting the chemistries available to the formulator. This paper reviews, in a general sense, the polymer characteristics found most useful, and novel formulating approaches employed in the development of a PSA suitable for the benign stamp application.
