Development of a Water Based PSA for Postage Stamps, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
Tracey Kay Pennington--When developing an adhesive for postage stamps many factors had to be considered. The adhesive not only had to pass the testing criteria set up by the United States Postal Service, but also needed to have characteristics so that it could be run on any type of coating and converting equipment that would be used in the manufacturing of postage stamps. To develop a water based adhesive that was versatile, involved analyzing the adhesive for many performance characteristics such as particle size distribution, high shear rheology and surface tension. These properties are important since the adhesive must be able to wet out any liner, run on any coater and be able to be efficiently printed and converted into final material. The processing parameters were controlled by use of an optimized rheology package.
