Michael J. O’Brien, Ph.D. --Silicones have a number of unique properties that make them useful in a variety of applications. These properties include thermal stability, chemical inertness, resistance to weathering, good dielectric properties, low surface energy and relatively mild dependence of physical properties on temperature. Applications include greases, adhesives, coatings (including release coatings), sealants, elastomers, and additives. However, some of these unique properties can also complicate the recycling of silicone based release liners.
