Focused High Frequency Ultrasonic Removal of Xerographic Toner from Paper Surfaces, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

Madanshetty --A novel technique called the Acoustic Coaxing Induced Microcavitation (ACIM) to remove resin-bonded xerographic ink particles from paper surfaces is described in this paper. This is a chemical-free technique that uses the ultrasonic energy applied in the pulsed mode at high frequencies to generate microcavitation at the paper-toner interface and release them into the coupling medium, namely, water. This paper describes the results from a preliminary study to prove the concept and study the effects of primary process parameters, namely, pressure amplitude and pulse width on the residence time for deinking initiation and completion. The experimental setup and the transducer characteristics are described.
