Resolutions to Increase Liner Acceptability, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
Charles W. Newing--The avoidance of liners in repulping mills is due the objection of using materials which provide tensile weakness or poor printability to papers made from the resulting pulp. The reactions between the pulping medium and the silicone on the liner are not known. The quantity of silicon remaining in the resulting pulp and whether the silicon is as a hydrophobic silicone or as a hydrophilic silicon species is yet to be determined. These answers are necessary to financially justify changes in the repulping methods used to obtain pulp fiber that can be used for high quality printing papers.
