Deinking of Furnishes Containing Water-Based Inks Using a Laboratory Apparatus Designed for Process Water Recycle, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
John K. Borchardt--Flexographic newsprint is widely known to be difficult to deink in both flotation and wash processes. Both laboratory and pilot mill flotation - wash deinking tests of flexographic newsprint containing furnishes are described below. Process parameters studied include flexographic newsprint content in the furnish, process pH, and changes in the deinking surfactant and surfactant concentration. Both nonionic and anionic surfactants were studied. The design of a laboratory benchtop closed loop deinking apparatus is described and its use to study flotation - wash deinking is detailed. The effect of varying the ratio of offset-printed newspapers and flexographic printed newspapers in a 70:30 newspaper:magazine furnish using this apparatus is described. The effect of increasing process water recycle on pulp brightness, ERIC values and process water turbidity is detailed.
