Improving Wax Removal in OCC Pulping Systems, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

Joseph R. Cable, Jason Boyd, David K. Finn--A modern problem solving effort to reduce wax contamination problems in 100% recycled linerboard revealed engineering design flaws and operational opportunities associated with Gyroclean lightweight contaminant removal systems. A detailed system map was developed using WinGEMS process simulation software. The pulping, screening, and cleaning system model used seventy-five Hexane extractions to identify the mass wax flow and removal efficiencies of each unit operation. Implemented system redesign improved sheet appearance and eliminated the need for thermal dispersion. Trials were run with various slotted screen cylinders to improve wax removal with varied results reported. Through an OCC bale inspection program, data was collected to rank suppliers according to wax contamination level. The results along with the problem solving method should be widely applicable to the fast growing recycled linerboard industry that demands high quality while learning to deal with wax contamination.
