Challenges in the Development of Self-Adhesive Stamps, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
Rajendra Kumar--Self-adhesive technology has played a very important role in the development of multitudes of consumer products ever since the 1920s. The US Postal Service first introduced a pre-canceled 10 cent Peace on Earth self-adhesive stamp in 1974. However, it had to be discontinued due to complaints by philatelists regarding several adhesive related problems. In response to public demand regarding convenience and hygiene, we took up the challenge in conjunction with the pressure sensitive adhesive industry in the development of self-adhesive stamps in 1987. In 1989, the United States Postal Service issued the Eagle and Shield self-adhesive stamps successfully, addressing various issues of the philatelic community and also implementing the requirements of the mail processing, shipping, storage, and retail environments.
