S. Zhang, David Peterson, Dewei Qi--This work focuses on the investigation of the effects of fines concentrations, over a wide range, on the mechanical properties of recycled paper. The results are systematically compared with those of similar hand sheets made from virgin pulp. It has been observed that the mechanical strength of paper made from both virgin and recycled pulp increases as the fines content increases to a maximum and then decreases as the fines concentration is further increased. There is an optimal fines concentration corresponding to a maximum mechanical strength. The experimental results of mechanical properties are explained using a fiber network model and shear lag theory.
