Review of Quantification Methods for PSA and Other Stickies, 2000 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

An overview of the methods used to quantify sticky contaminants in recycled fiber is presented. Quantification is necessary for the control of incoming raw material quality and for monitoring of the pulp produced from recovered paper. Stickies are broadly categorized based on their size as being either macro or micro. Quantification methods for macro stickies generally relies on fine-slotted laboratory screening to separate stickies from pulp, followed by examination of the stickies by image analysis or by some manual counting method. Micro stickies are generally quantified by measuring the accumulation of tacky contaminants that adsorb onto a hydrophobic collector suspended in the contaminated pulp.
