Bleaching of Secondary Kraft Pulp with Sodium Hydrosulfite, 1993 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

Different furnishes of deinked secondary kraft fibers were bleached using sodium hydrosulfite. The use of different chemicals and bleaching sequences to brighten the pulp to an IS0 brightness of 80+% was investigated. It was found that depending on the pulp furnish, sodium hydrosulfite alone can increase the brightness up to 5%. The use of a chelant during additional bleaching process improved the brightness up to 3.5 points. The choice of the chelant depends on the pH and temperature of the bleaching stage. It was concluded that it is possible to obtain 80+% IS0 on deinked kraft pulp under the conditions described in this paper.
