Using a novel sheet preparation method, specially designed inked sheets have been used to study the effect of ink particle size and speck distribution on sheet brightness. The method has enabled precise control of ink size, shape, distribution and area. The effects of these variables on brightness are described. Meanwhile, a model is proposed to predict brightness as a function of ink size distribution, ink area and paper type. The model quantifies how recycle sheet brightness is governed by both the absorption and scattering characteristics of the base sheet fibre and the absorption levels of the “active” ink speck surfaces. With this model the complementary roles of the deinking plant and feed furnish can be better defined and optimized.
