Depending on Local Groups to Supply Adequate Amounts of Fiber to Keep a Mill Going, 1993 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

William P. Moore

Over the last five years we have seen great structural changes in the methods to use to collect much of secondary fiber for the paper industry. The solid waste management industry has taken over a large percentage of the bulk grade collection that was once handled on a very small generator level. We

expect this trend to continue, and it is the most efficient way to deal with grades such as ONP and OCC. However, we expect to see a renewed interest in the collection of certain specialty grades by local community and non-profit groups. Because of the high cost of

collection of magazines and other specialty packaging items, these groups are in an excellent position to put the infrastructure in place to collect grades that are necessary to boost the overall paper recycling rate, and to supply certain needed furnishes for the paper mill industry.
