During the last years Valmet-Tampella Inc. has paid much attention to further develop equipment at its Research Center in Finland to simplify OCC processing, to decrease its energy consumption and to improve the recycled stock quality for board making.

As a result of this work a new pulper concept has been developed. This new equipment includes the coarse screening stage, which has conventionally been made by having pressure screens with hole baskets in three stages.

In this paper the design of the new pulping concept is described including results from actual trials at VTA Research Center.

To improve the pulp quality and cleanliness and to further simplify the OCC processing, trial results when using very fine slots are also described.

These trials indicate strongly that very clean OCC stocks can be produced without installing complicated and high energy consuming cleaner systems running at the low consistencies.
