Successful Start-Up of a New Deinking Plant to Recycle Office Waste Into Market Pulp, 1994 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

During fall of 1993, Superior Recycled Fiber Industries of Duluth, Minnesota started operation of a new deinking plant. The plant was designed to recycle, as a daily maximum capacity, 390 OD tons of sorted office waste into 290 OD tons of market grade printing and writing pulp. The plant began deinking operations ahead of schedule, and currently produces deinked wet lap pulp which meets or exceeds the pulp purchasers’ mill quality specifications. The process technology involved includes pulping, cleaning and screening, flotation, dispersion, post flotation and washing. The start-up and operation have been successful due in large part to thorough in-house operator training and a well planned commissioning program. This paper presents some of the background behind the operation.
