New Approach to the Control of Stickies, 1994 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

John Ward, Denise Hensel, Jim Patterson

Research efforts have led to the development of a unique, high charge density polymer. The charge properties of this polymer and its low molecular weight allow it to “fix” stickies to fibers and remove them from the wet end system without adverse effect on wet end chemistry or retention. A low foaming nonionic surfactant dispersant has also been developed to improve particle size reduction in the repulping process. The polymer has been used, along with the non-ionic dispersant to successfully control stickies problems on a LWC machine.

This dispersion/fixation approach allows stickies present in deinked fibers or other fiber sources to be reduced in particle size and then fixed to fibers for retention in the sheet. It is a useful and practical procedure for improved stickies control.
