During the repulping of old newspapers and old magazines, it is well known that hydrogen peroxide has no direct effect on the detachment of hard to detach inks such as old offset inks printed on newspaper. However, although this is assumed to be true by most people, it has not really been proven because the means to estimate ink detachment were not very accurate. With the recent ERIC device capable of measuring only the residual inks on fibres, it is now possible to estimate the ink detachment quickly. This paper shows that if the ink detachment is improved during hydrogen peroxide bleaching, it is not due to the peroxide itself but to the alkaline conditions necessary to get a good bleaching efficiency.
