This case study of the Lecoursonnois paper mill in Mennecy, France, producing 150 T/d of corrugating medium from old corrugated containers (OCC) demonstrates a new technology for the closing of the whitewater circuit of such a mill.
The industrial scale process was piloted on a bench-scale prior to design, and the results of this study gave information on what effects whitewater treatment would have on mechanical strength properties of paper, and on the whitewater quality itself.
The full-scale system for whitewater treatment is based on a 4.5 m diameter fluidized bed reactor in which anaerobic bacteria decompose starch and sugars present in the whitewater.
