Fiber/Toner Detachment Studies: Repulping and Flotation of Laser Printed Paper, Part II, 1995 Recycling Symposium Proceedings

A microscopic examination of repulped mixed office waste paper from three recycle mills and from two large scale pilot plant trials indicates in every case that significant percentages of toner particles with retained (undetached) fibers are present in the repulped stock. These “hairy” particles appear to be the result of inefficient repulping of electrostatically and laser printed paper. In a comparison of a repulped furnish of laser printed sheets containing a typical mixture of clean and hairy particles, to one in which all retained fibers were removed by a cellulase enzyme treatment, it is shown that the clean furnish is significantly more floatable. Results of fitting the flotation rate curves to the parameters of a statistical, global model clearly indicate the nonfloatable nature of hairy particles and the impact they have on flotation efficiency.
