Influence of Surface Treatment Chemicals on the Recyclability of Alkaline Paper. Part I: Paper Printed With Offset and Ink-Jet Processes
The effects of different surface treatment chemicals on the deinking potential of paper printed with different processes, are assessed. The ability of different surface treatment chemistry to assist or inhibit the deinking process is evaluated. Surface treatment resins included styrene/maleic, styrene/acrylic, and styrene/acrylate chemistry. Printing processes included offset and ink-jet. A laboratory pulper/flotation cell was used for recycling/deinking the printed paper. Paper was prepared on a pilot machine with the use of an inclined size press for the surface treatment. Part II of this study will discuss the results on xerography and laser printing processes, which will be published at a later date.
