The usage of mixed office waste for recycled fiber applications has increased dramatically in recent years. Problems associated with toner inks in the papermaking process have proven to be a technical challenge. Toner inks are relatively hydrophobic and tacky under certain conditions. The dispersibility of toner inks (e.g., degree of release from fibers, size, shape, etc.) at the repulping stage depends on the nature of ink particles, thermal and mechanical energies, and chemical treatment. This paper investigates the characteristics of toner ink surface, such as surface energy, polar/non-polar proper-ties, and wettability, and correlates these properties to toner ink behavior in a pulper. The effect of chemical treatment on toner ink surface properties and behavior is also discussed. This study shows potential applications for toner ink removal by washing, dispersion, and flotation.
