Obtaining 82+ GE with a MOW Furnish (Clorine Free)

Ponderosa Fibers of America is constructing a green field mixed office wastepaper recycling plant in Northampton, PA. Studies were conducted on both laboratory and pilot scale to assess the feasibility of bleaching mixed office waste (MOW) to an 82 GE brightness for a deinked market pulp. Pulp samples were produced from a lightly sorted and an unsorted MOW furnish containing high color, some groundwood and OCC, which was generated from system simulation trials conducted at the Celleco Hedemora pilot plant. Deinked brightness of these pulps started as low as 65 GE with stickies counts as high as 212 per 150 grams of pulp and TAPPI dirt of 95 ppm. The final bleached brightness was as high as 84 GE with 0 stickies and 3 ppm TAPPI dirt.
