Visual Observations of Bubble/Particle Interactions

Abstract or Limited Content Only - Paper Not for Sale!

This poster session will consist of a 10-12 minute videotape presentation of medium speed photography of bubble/particle interactions in two experimental settings. The first device is a specially designed bubble cell in which a bubble is created at the tip of a syringe. Particles are introduced into the liquid, and agitated. Interactions between the bubble and particles are then recorded by videocamera taping. In this presentation several types of particles will be featured, including: (1) repulped laser printed paper containing the usual mixture of clean and hairy particles; (2) “cleaned” toner particles; and (3) three types of stickies, including acrylic-based, styrene/butadiene copolymer, and styrene/isoprene/styrene (SIS) triblock copolymer. The second experimental device involves force measurements using an atomic force type apparatus we have recently built. In this experiment particles are mounted on the tip of a small cantilever (100 µm in length) and slowly advanced towards a stationary bubble under very controlled conditions. In this presentation videocamera tapes will be shown of the following types of particles: (1) a silica (glass) bead (40 pm); (2) a specially “hydrophobized” glass bead; (3) a flat toner particle (about 40 µm); and (4) a sharply pointed toner particle. The videotape presentation will be supplemented by a poster showing the design of the two apparatuses, and some experimental results.
