Self-Deinking Method for Mixed Papers Containing Plastics, 1997 Recycling Symposium Proceedings
Plastic contaminants present in mixed recovered paper are usually considered useless and troublesome, and are, therefore, discarded before paper is processed. This operation increases the overall cost of the final recycled. pulp. A self-deinking method in which the plastic contaminants are kept in the system to retain inks and other colloids (clay TiO2 , calcium carbonate, ...) is being developed. In the process, the polymeric contaminants present in the furnish are transformed into scavengers for inks and other colloids during the pulping stage. Deinking is achieved when the ink-loaded plastics are separated from the valuable fibers by screening. In the current investigation, a variety of factors that influence ink and colloid retention by the plastics are studied. These factors encompass the pulping liquor composition, temperature and time, and the types of polymeric contaminants present in the waste stream.
